Compression Stockings vs Vein Creams: What the Evidence Actually Shows

If you have spider veins, facial redness, or legs that ache and swell by the end of the day, you have likely come across creams and topical products promising visible improvement. Some people find these temporarily soothing. The evidence, however, consistently supports a different approach.

Topical vein creams — however well-marketed — cannot reach inside a vein, cannot repair a damaged valve, and cannot address the circulatory mechanics that cause venous symptoms. A cream may relieve surface discomfort briefly. It does not change what is happening underneath.

How Compression Stockings Work

Medical-grade compression stockings apply graduated pressure to the leg — strongest at the ankle, progressively reducing toward the knee. This assists blood flow back toward the heart, compensating for weakened vein valves. For people with leg swelling, heaviness, aching, or visible veins, properly fitted compression stockings can:

  • Reduce swelling and fluid accumulation in the lower leg
  • Relieve feelings of heaviness and fatigue
  • Reduce blood pooling in dilated veins
  • Support circulation during prolonged sitting or standing

Compression therapy is an internationally recognised conservative treatment for chronic venous disease. It is not a substitute for specialist assessment — but it is often the right starting point.

What VEIN + SKIN Treats

At VEIN + SKIN, we treat spider veins and facial redness using the Excel V+ laser — a gold-standard vascular laser that targets visible vessels with precision, without damaging surrounding skin. Compression stockings are a useful adjunct for managing leg vein symptoms, but they are not a substitute for laser treatment of visible spider veins.

When Further Assessment Is Needed

For some patients, visible veins or persistent leg symptoms point to an underlying venous condition. Where this is clinically appropriate, a vascular ultrasound can be arranged on-site. Every patient with a valid GP referral has their scan bulk billed.

Where findings warrant specialist review, patients are seen by Dr Igor Banzic — vascular and endovascular surgeon and the specialist behind Northern Sydney Vascular. Dr Banzic has over 22 years of experience in the diagnosis and surgical management of venous disease, including varicose veins, venous insufficiency, and complex vascular conditions. An appointment can be arranged at the appropriate consulting location based on clinical need.
